Suburban Community Hospital Nationally Recognized with an ‘A’ Grade in the Fall 2019 Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grades

East Norriton, PA, November 7, 2019 – For the first time, Suburban Community Hospital, a member of Prime Healthcare, has received an A for patient safety in the latest Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grades report card.

The biannual report card recognizes hospitals across the country for their efforts to protect patients from harm and provide safer healthcare.

“The honor of receiving an ‘A’ is a pinnacle achievement for our Hospital. Our team members are dedicated to providing the best outcomes for our patients through the implementation of high reliability tools and behaviors across the board,” said Matt Shelak, CEO of Suburban Community Hospital. “I applaud our team for the outstanding and safe care they provide each and every day that contributed to this success.”

For the last several years, Leapfrog consistently awarded Bs to Suburban Community Hospital with one exception. The latest period reflects a concerted effort by the hospital to improve every-day procedures to protect patients from harm and meet the highest safety standards in the United States.

“‘A’ hospitals show us their leadership is protecting patients from preventable medical harm and error,” said Leah Binder, president and CEO of The Leapfrog Group. “It takes genuine commitment at every level – from clinicians to administrators to the board of directors – and we congratulate the teams who have worked so hard to earn this A.”

The Leapfrog Group is an independent national watchdog organization driven by employers and other purchasers of healthcare committed to improving healthcare quality and safety for consumers and purchasers.

The Safety Grade assigns “A” to “F” letter grades to all general hospitals across the country based on their performance in preventing medical errors, injuries, accidents, infections and other harms to patients in their care.

Developed under the guidance of a national Expert Panel, the Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade uses 28 measures of publicly available hospital safety data to assign grades to more than 2,600 U.S. acute-care hospitals twice per year. The Hospital Safety Grade’s methodology is peer-reviewed and fully transparent, and the results are free to the public.

“Improving patient care by focusing on key quality and safety indicators is integral to achieving Suburban Community Hospital’s overall quality and safety objectives,” said Dorothy Patzek MSN, RN, NEA-BC, Chief Operating Officer. “Quality data is a critical tool that allows us to promote performance improvement and focus on protecting patients from preventable harm and delivering safe, high-quality care to the communities we serve.”

Recently, Suburban Community Hospital was recipient of the Healthgrades 2019 Patient Safety Excellence Award, named among the Top 5% in the Nation, and was the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association Get With the Guidelines Stroke Gold Plus with Honor Roll Elite Award recipient in 2019.
