What set’s your residency apart from other General Surgery Residencies?

Suburban Community Hospital General Surgery Residency Program provides a well-rounded learning experience for the surgical resident. With a strong focus on education, our residents go on to become proficient in the field of surgery.

How many residency positions are there per year?

We are funded for 8 surgical resident positions.

Is the program unopposed?

No. Suburban Community Hospital has residencies in Internal Medicine, Family Medicine and Tradtional Rotating Internship.

Does your program offer positions outside of the Match?

No. Positions are only offered through the National Resident Matching Program.

What does interview day look like?

The night before interview day, a dinner with the current surgical residents and interviewers is held. This provides the applicant time to be able to ask questions as well as get to know the current surgical residents. During interview day, the applicant will observe our weekly educational curriculum as well as interview with our program director and other surgical preceptors. A tour of the hospital will also be given.

What are the intern/resident call responsibilities?

Suburban Community Hospital’s surgical internship follows the guidelines established by the AOA for a general surgery internship. The intern’s responsibility will fall on which service they are on. Resident call responsibilities are at the discretion of the surgical preceptor.

Are residents permitted to complete an outside elective?

With approval from the program direct, our residents will have opportunities for outside elective rotations during the course of their training.

Are there opportunities for teaching?

Yes! Suburban Community Hospital is a core rotation site for the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine (PCOM) and Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine (LECOM). We also accept students for elective rotations from other osteopathic schools. You will have the opportunity to work and teach these students as they complete their rotation with us.

How much vacation will I have?

Vacation for residents is 2 weeks with holidays

Where have recent graduates gone onto practice?

Recent graduates from our program have achieved fellowships in the field of their interest as well as practice in the area of their interest.

What patient population do the residents serve at Suburban Community Hospital?

Our hospital is located in a suburban area outside of Philadelphia. We treat a wide variety of patient population.

Is moonlighting allowed?

Residents will have an opportunity to moonlight as a more senior position.
