General Surgery is a clinical discipline devoted to diagnosis and management of a broad range of diseases and conditions that may require surgical treatment. The scope of general surgery is vast and encompasses most of the major organ systems and tissues of the body, including the:

  • Gastrointestinal tract (esophagus, stomach, intestines, and rectum)
  • Abdomen and abdominal organs (gallbladder, pancreas, liver, and spleen)
  • Breasts
  • Skin and soft tissues
  • Adrenal, thyroid and parathyroid glands
  • Blood vessels (arteries and veins)

General surgeons are doctors who are board-certified as specialists in many different types of surgery. At Suburban Community Hospital, our general surgeons are an important part of your care team.

Our operating rooms are equipped with the latest technology, including laparoscopes, microscopes, and da Vinci. These and other modalities are used to assist in surgery and help speed our patients’ recovery. When appropriate, many doctors and patients choose techniques that allow for same day surgery in our Outpatient Surgery Center. The convenient and efficient center includes sophisticated operating suites designed for the safety and comfort of our patients.

General Surgery

Suburban Community Hospital Department of General Surgery provides surgical diagnosis, treatment and follow-up care for diseases and conditions in the colon and digestive systems of the body.

General surgeons perform some of the most common surgeries in our hospital. These include surgeries done in the abdomen—for example, if you need to have your appendix removed or get a hernia repaired, you’re likely to see a general surgeon for your procedure.

In addition, you may work with a general surgeon for diagnostic procedures, such as a biopsy (tissue sample).

Neurology

Neurology is the branch of medicine that deals with the structure and function of the nervous system and the treatment of the diseases and disorders that affect it.

Suburban Community Hospital’s board-certified, experienced neurologists use the latest clinical guidelines and state-of-the-art technologies to diagnose and treat patients with a range of neurological conditions.

Our physicians have a diverse range of sub-specialties, allowing us to serve the community with comprehensive neurological care. When necessary, the physicians also work closely with other specialists, to provide the best possible patient care.

Maximum Expertise in Minimally Invasive Surgery

The general surgery team at Suburban Community Hospital has extensive experience with minimally invasive surgery. Unlike traditional open procedures done with a large incision, our surgeons can perform many surgeries with just a few tiny incisions. In some cases, you might have a surgery with no incision at all.

Experience the Difference da Vinci® Surgery Can Make

If you’re having a urologic, gynecologic, general surgery, or colorectal procedure, you may be a candidate for the new da Vinci Surgical System at Suburban Community Hospital. Da Vinci is a sophisticated surgical platform that lets surgeons perform complex and delicate procedures using a minimally invasive approach through just a few small incisions. As a result, you may get back to your normal routine faster—without the usual recovery that follows major surgery. Learn more about the da Vinci surgery options at Suburban Community Hospital. How Does da Vinci Surgery Work?

  • The da Vinci System consists of an ergonomic surgeon’s console, a patient-side cart with four interactive robotic arms, a 3D HD vision system and miniaturized instruments.
  • The surgeon controls the da Vinci System, which translates his or her hand movements into precise movements of tiny instruments inside the body.
  • Through a few small incisions, he or she uses the console’s master controls to move the patient-side cart’s four robotic arms.
  • These arms securely hold the patented EndoWrist® instruments and high-resolution camera. The instruments’ jointed-wrist design exceeds the natural range of motion of the human hand

The da Vinci Surgical System lets surgeons perform minimally invasive procedures, even those that involve complex and delicate dissection or reconstruction.

Has da Vinci Surgery Been Tested?

Over the past decade, more than 1.5 million da Vinci Surgeries have been performed in major clinical centers around the world. And you can feel confident knowing that clinical studies support its effectiveness in minimally invasive surgery. There are thousands of peer-reviewed publications discussing the safety and effectiveness of da Vinci surgery.

What Does it Mean for Me?

With da Vinci surgery, you could have:

  • Less pain
  • Less blood loss
  • Shorter hospital stay
  • Fewer complications
  • Faster return to normal activities

Even Faster Recovery with Single-Site Surgery

Suburban Community Hospital also uses the da Vinci Surgical System to perform complex, minimally invasive procedures using the Single-Site method. With robotic assistance, our expert surgeons can fix a wide-range of conditions through a tiny, single incision in your belly button. In addition to all the benefits of regular da Vinci surgery, Single-Site surgery is almost scar-free.

What’s the Difference Between Regular & Single-Site da Vinci surgery?

Regular da Vinci surgery

3-5 small incisions.

Single-site da Vinci surgery

A single incision in your belly button where
instruments are placed and the diseased
or damaged organ is removed.

Can I Get Single-Site Surgery?

Our surgeons typically recommend single-site surgery for patients who are candidates for laparoscopic (minimally invasive) procedures. Patients who choose single-site over laparoscopic surgery are able to get back to doing what they love much sooner. Suburban Community Hospital provides single-site surgery for:

  • Hysterectomy (removal of uterus, ovaries and fallopian tubes)
  • Cholecystectomy (removal of the gallbladder)
